The Nature of Sapphire

All transparent substances have a measure of clarity. The measure of clarity was established by Ernst Abbe, a German physicist. It is important to note however, that the measure of clarity was not based on an arbitrary scale. Rather it was derived from the actual measurement of the wavelengths and refractive index in relation to one another.

For sapphire, this measurement is 72.2 (Jewish sources say the block in mishpatim was "like sapphire") and interestingly, the crystalline structure of sapphire is trigonal, so the connection that this sapphire-like substance has to God’s Explicit Name should not go unnoticed.
